A couple of truths about suits. 1) You need at least one. 2) It’s going to cost you a minimum few hundred dollars.
The exact dollar amount you spend on a suit is entirely up to you, but here is a guideline to explain the options.
$300 - $750: Thanks to modern technology, cheap labour and the free market; finding a cheap suit is now possible. Be wary of the cheaper fabrics and machine cut fit, often these suits are mass produced and not designed to fit as sleekly as you should be aiming for. Poor quality and poor fit will not only mean cheaper image, but also a shorter shelf life in your wardrobe- especially after the first dry-clean.
$750-$1250: At this price point you can get a stylish well-made suit that will last you for the foreseeable future. Investing in natural fabrics, full or half canvas construction, working buttons and better fit will pay off in the way that you present yourself when the suit is worn. Consider the handwork and the lining and attention to finer details which make a difference in the way that the suit moves and breathes while you are wearing it.
On the other end of the spectrum, paying more than $3500 for a basic suit is probably unnecessary. From Brioni to Kiton to Tom Ford, a lot of people get caught up in the labels, but the quality is not markedly higher.
